Beginning and intermediate wood carvers will be introduced to the Scandinavian Flat Plane style of carving. Students will learn some basic cuts then will be led step by step through carving a six inch tall, full body caricature. A large number of examples will be provided by the instructor for inspiration and discussion purposes. Painting and finishing techniques will be covered. A $10.00 material fee can be paid to the instructor for a carving blank. Students will need to arrive for class with a carving knife and a kevlar glove. Carving gloves and a quality, entry level, flat plane carving knife can be purchased from TreelineUSA.com or Mountainwoodcarvers.com . I would recommend Flexcut or OCC brands with a 1-½” to 1-¾” blade. Don't go smaller than 1-½”. If you decide you don't like carving, I will happily buy the knife from you!

Enhance your watercolors by learning new techniques and practicing basic skills to create exciting watercolor paintings. Students will begin with exercises aimed at learning composition, working wet in wet, and adding texture that you will use in two paintings with a bird theme. Students will work from instructors selected reference photos. The instructor has been watercolorist for over 15 years and is a signature member in the Northern Plains Watercolor Society. Some watercolor experience suggested. Note: Suggested supply list to be shared with students before class starts.

In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to “decode” patterns step by step by breaking down common abbreviations, understanding repeats, and reading instructions without feeling overwhelmed. You’ll also practice with a simple sample pattern so you can immediately apply what you learn during class. Topics include reading line-by-line instructions and symbols, understanding turning chains and stitch counts, and tips for avoiding common mistakes. Students should have basic crochet skills (slip knot, foundation chain, and familiarity with single, double, and treble crochet) and bring worsted weight yarn, an appropriate hook (5.5mm–6.5mm suggested), and scissors.

We’ll help you identify and fix common mistakes, count stitches and rows accurately, clarify patterns, and learn how to “read” your crochet work so you can create a plan to finish. Basic crochet skills (slip knot, foundation chain, single and double crochet) are recommended, and participants should bring their current project(s), yarn, hook, scissors, and any patterns they are using.

Imagine spinning unique yarns from exotic fleeces and luscious rovings…just as your ancestors did! If you're interested in fiber arts, there's nothing like making your own products. This hands-on intro class will teach you the basics of spinning on a wheel using a variety of prepared wool materials. We will also discuss carding, finishing, and plying. Students will have the chance to try several models of spinning wheels and will go home with a skein or two of handspun yearn! Class will take a 1-hour lunch break on your own. NOTE: Please plan to spin in your stocking feet. $20 supply fee paid to instructor. 

In this course, your instructor will guide you through the steps of making paper. You will use simple processes that you can do at home using an ordinary blender and other household items. This is a fun and eco-friendly process good for all experience levels and backgrounds. Enrollment is limited; book early!
